The Oscars 2008

I actually enjoyed watching the Oscars this year. I just felt like there was a lot of genuine speeches. And I LOVE the fact that "Falling Slowly" from Once not only got a nominated and was performed, but the song actually won! I love that song and that movie. Makes me feel like this week won't be so bad...even with all the snow to come.

Waitress

Yes, I'm taking summer school. That's why I haven't been around much. Not much free time. I had to study this weekend, but I did sneak in a little time to go watch a movie. I could have gone to watch one of those big summer movies like Ocean's 13 or Pirates of the Caribbean, but I saw Waitress. And I am very happy with the choice I made. I love and adore this movie. Keri Russell. Nathan Fillion. Andy Griffth. Jeremy Sisto. And a little bittersweet because the writer/director of this movie is no longer with us, but she left behind a wonderful work to be remembered. My favorite movie so far this year. Actually, may be one of my favorite movies of all time. So go watch and support this little movie. And eat pie!

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year, my LJ friends! I know it's a few days into the new year already, but better late than never, right? I had a good NYE. Went to a friend's party who was celebrating new year's and his 30th b-day. Didn't drink too much since I was working the next day but I didn't get home till 4 am. I have no idea how I got through the next day with only 3 hours of sleep. Haven't done that in a LONG time. And now I am trying to fulfill at least one of my new year's resolutions-cleaning and organizing all my junk while I have the time before classes start again. I am also trying to find a new job that is not in the retail field or is not a family member's business. Let me tell ya, since a certain Chicago institution has turned into a certain NY department store chain, the place sucks. Worse merchandise and even worse clientele. I definitely need to get out of there. So far, so good on the resolutions. I did start the cleaning and organizing. Go me.

My TV Schedule

Thought I should share what I'm watching this upcoming TV season so we can all share and discuss the shows we have in common.

Old favorites that I'll definitely be watching: Gilmore Girls (as long as the L/C stuff doesn't get too bad because I really just watch the show for Lauren Graham and LL now), Veronica Mars, Lost, Grey's Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, Project Runway, The Amazing Race, Smallville, Supernatural, My Name is Earl, The Office and when it comes back mid season, Scrubs. Very sad about no longer having Everwood on my list. :-(

New shows that I'll be checking out: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Vanished (Victor Garber and Kerr Smith!), Ugly Betty, and if I remember, Heroes and The Nine.

Yeah...I watch a lot of TV. But I TiVo everything and watch at my leisure. Always gives me something to watch when I'm bored or procrastinating. :-)

GG: I Get a Sidekick Out of You

This episode was on again and it was one of the only good episodes this past season, but I feel that I should clarify some things the show got wrong. The show made it seem like a lot of the things going on was Buddhist when it was actually Korean cultural stuff. Like the wedding garb Zach and Lane were wearing was not Buddhist but traditional Korean wedding garments. And on the subject of clothing, the mother of the bride would traditionally wear a pink Korean dress, but Mama Kim was wearing purple. And there are still people who have both a traditional Korean wedding and a more Western one. I've been to a wedding or two that had both. Since Mrs. Kim seems so traditional, it wouldn't have surprised me if there had been two weddings with or without Grandma Kim.

They did get one thing perfect though. The way the guest grabbed food and gave money is very Korean. At the weddings I've been to with a Korean bride and groom, the older Korean guests always just give money as a gift and leave right after dinner. And they usually run off with leftovers and the center pieces. Heh.

Anyway, watching that episode again made me remember the things that bugged me, and I wanted to say those things were Korean and not necessarily Buddhist. Besides, the Korean culture is more influenced by Confucius than Buddhism.

Since it was way too hot to step outside this weekend, I had plenty of time to kill with some laundry and some cleaning and some Firefly watching. I didn't watch it when it originally aired because well, I'm not a fan of Westerns and this was described as a Western in space, so you can understand why I didn't tune in. Well, I should have trusted Joss. I loved the characters. And now I want more Firefly. May have to invest in the dvds. Thanks for sending me the tapes, Sun! Now you have to watch Veronica Mars and let me know what you think. ;-)

Btw, you should watch that show, Sun. You'd love it. Great Scrubs finale. That show cracks me up. Great GG episode with some good L/L action. Can't wait till the finale next week. And Uchenna and Joyce won on The Amazing Race! All is right with the world. I couldn't help but notice how happy all the other eliminated teams were to see them cross the finish line before Rob and Amber. Heh.

And now you can add DirecTV to the list. For some funky, strange reason, the local channels decided to do a disappearing act at around 7:30pm and last about an hour.
Stupid Costco...

What is the point of having my Costco membership if they don't have the dvds I want? Nevermind that I don't pay for my membership but someone does and I think I should be able to find my dvds when I want them. So, as you know, Buffy's last season came out this Tuesday. And as the big fan geek that I am, I went there on Tuesday to purchase my dvds. But guess what. They didn't have any. Then I figured the shipment was late or something because they do have it available on their website, so I went in again today. Still no Buffy! They had Smallville but no Buffy. :-( Now I'm just going to order it on amazon.com but I won't get them till next week. That's another week before I get to do my Buffy viewing. Sigh. I'm so annoyed. All I want is my Buffy dvds. Is that too much to ask?

Another perspective on Lost

It seems that I have been spending a lot of time with my father this weekend. We even went to go to vote this morning together. It was the first election either one of us voted in. Nice father/daughter moment. Awww...

Anyway, the point to my post is that we spent the weekend doing a Lost marathon. Starting with the pilot. And he had his own interesting perspective on Jin. He didn't like the way Jin was withdrawn and closed off. He felt it showed a negative image of a Korean male because he believes a Korean male would be the first to volunteer and help the survivors. That comment made me think. That's when I realized that that's what my dad would do and that's why he was pointing this out, so he didn't understand why Jin wouldn't do the same. But I also understand why they made the character the way he is. Everyone reacts differently during a time of crisis. Some will go out and help others. Some will do whatever they can to find a solution. Some will close themselves off and will try to fend for themselves. And that's what Jin has been designated to do. It didn't necessarily have to be his character that was the one that reacted this way, but I'm guessing with the background they had for the Korean couple and the fact that they wouldn't be able to speak the same language as the other survivors, made it easy to make the Korean couple be the ones that close themselves off. So while it seems sort of stereotypical to deem the Korean guy this way, I also understand why the creators picked him to be that way. Whoa. Too much analysis for a TV character. But hey, check out my bi-cultural analysis. I can see both sides. Heh.

4th of July Weekend

Owww! I started off the weekend by pulling a muscle in my back. Actually, I think I did it before the weekend but the full affect hit me this weekend. Ironically, I pulled the muscle while trying to do this exercise that's suppose to help strengthen your back. Go figure. But luckily, I still got to do most of the usual 4th of July weekend stuff. Saw some fireworks and ate a lot of bbq and watermelon. Of course, the weekend also involved a lot of time on the bed in this weird angle that was the only comfortable position I could find. I did get to catch up on a lot of the Dawson's Creek Season 3 dvd episodes. Still can't get use to the new theme song though. It's just too weird.

I heard that the WB has selected a new President of Entertainment. I only have one question. Where was my phone call for the job? You know that running a TV network would be the perfect job for me. ;-)

Buffy Season 6 DVDs

I was so happy to find that my Buffy Season 6 dvds were waiting for me when I got home last night. Of course the first thing I watched was OM, WF. One of favorite episodes of all time. And there's so many other goodies to explore. That's what I'll be doing this long weekend.

Angel

It's over. Waahhhh! Stupid WB. They should have given the show one more season b/c the show definitely had another season left in it.

Sun, I know a lot of people offered but I also have the Angel finale TiVoed so if you need a copy just say the word. Even if I put it on tape, it'll be from a nice, digital copy. ;-)
